Our Philosophy on AI in Hiring

At Pinterest, we are building the future of visual discovery and inspiration, with artificial intelligence at the core of our innovation. As an AI-forward organization, we consistently use AI to solve real problems faster, with higher quality and impact.

We see AI as a force multiplier — a tool that enhances human intellect and creativity, not a replacement for it. At the same time, we hire people for their unique problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and ability to move ideas into action. Our interview process is designed to understand those core abilities.

Being fluent in AI is essential to excelling in our roles. You will see that reflected in our interview questions as we not only screen for individual skills and thought processes, but also AI fluency and how you use it in your job. This philosophy is our guide to balancing these two goals, ensuring a fair and transparent process for everyone.

Our AI Guidelines for Candidates

We believe AI should augment your work. Use it to enhance your efficiency, brainstorm ideas, or debug issues, but never as a replacement for your own critical thinking. Use sound judgment to know when and how to use AI or use your own expertise to achieve the best outcome.

You own the final answer and the reasoning behind it must be yours. This means taking accountability of your work, checking for accuracy, relevance, completeness and being transparent about your process before acting or sharing. We care about how you protect sensitive information and design the right guardrails when using AI tools.

We are interested in your experience, proficiency and curiosity in using new AI tools to continuously adapt how work gets done. This means sharing how you would use AI to approach experiments and iterate on existing workflows.

Our goal is to understand your authentic skills. Parts of our interview process will explicitly prohibit the use of AI to assess your foundational knowledge. We appreciate you upholding these guidelines.

How to Approach AI in Your Interview

We want to be clear about our expectations so you can be successful.

When AI is Encouraged

In specific, designated parts of the interview, we will invite you to use AI tools. This is your opportunity to show us how you work with them. For example, we might ask you to complete an assignment at home or virtually where AI assistance is permitted, or dedicate a section of a live technical screen where we'll explicitly ask you to use an AI-tool to help you. What we’re looking for: In these scenarios, we are assessing your ability to use sound judgment, give clear direction through effective prompts, thoughtfully review and evaluate the AI’s suggestions, and fully own the outcome with ongoing agility to deliver a well-reasoned solution.

When AI is Prohibited

For any live interview question, you should assume AI assistance is not permitted unless we explicitly tell you otherwise. This is our chance to assess how you approach problem-solving using your own critical thought process.
