Today, Life at Pinterest is joined by Wan Lin Wong, Sr. Staff Product Manager based in Singapore. Wan Lin started at Pinterest as an Account Manager on the Sales team, and now almost a decade later, she’s the first Product team member in the Asia Pacific region. In this blog, she’ll take us through her career journey, give us insight into life at Pinterest Singapore and share more about her work building advertising solutions for the APAC market.

Hi Wan Lin, thanks for joining us and happy work anniversary, or Pinniversary as we like to call it here! As you celebrate nine years at Pinterest, can you take us through your career journey at the company?

My path at Pinterest has been very fluid, filled with a lot of opportunities to learn and grow. I started on the Sales team as an Account Manager where I worked with performance advertisers to drive business outcomes with Pinterest ads.

During my time working with our advertising partners, I heard feedback and new ideas on ways to improve Pinterest ad performance. I ended up transitioning onto the product team to help bring some of those ideas to life, launching new ad formats like collections ads.

A few years later, I relocated from San Francisco to Singapore to be closer to family—and was lucky enough to continue my Pinterest adventure, this time leading a team focused on acquiring and retaining content suppliers. Now I’ve come full circle, rejoining the ads product team to build early products for our most strategic advertisers in the region.

What would you tell someone if they asked you why they should consider Pinterest Singapore as their next place to work?

It’s still a lean office where you can have a real impact. There’s a lot of autonomy to drive initiatives, wear different hats and learn a lot.

Are there any key learnings during your time here that you’d like to share with someone interested in joining the company?

Don’t be afraid to ask for opportunities! I didn’t have the traditional background for any of the roles I’ve been in at Pinterest, but I appreciate how as a company we value ability and potential, not just experience and credentials.

What or who inspires you at Pinterest?

I’m a serial shopper, so I love our visual search tool for when I can’t find the words to articulate the exact product that I’m looking for. I’ve bought too many things off of our visual search results.

How do you use Pinterest?

I’m a classic Pinner when it comes to Pinterest. You can trace all my major life moments through my boards – from wedding planning to home renovations and, most recently, nursery inspiration!
