Andréa Mallard is Pinterest’s Chief Marketing Officer and the executive sponsor of Women@, Pinterest’s employee resource group for women employees and their allies. Read on to learn more about how Pinterest is celebrating and honoring Women’s History Month.

March 1 is the start of Women’s History Month in the US, UK and Australia, and March 8 is International Women’s Day globally.

March also marks the one year anniversary of when most of us began feeling the full effects of the global pandemic and the start of what would become a prolonged lockdown.

As such, it feels important to also recognize the unique impact this pandemic has had on women. Globally, women make up 70% of health and social care workers, many of whom are putting their own lives at risk every day to treat patients with COVID-19. We have seen a mass exodus from the workforce for women across all professions, with women of color disproportionately impacted worldwide. In the US alone, women have lost a net of 5.4 million jobs, nearly one million more than men. Working mothers are reporting burnout and feeling forgotten, and since lockdowns started, there has been an uptick in global domestic violence reports. In short, what we have witnessed in the last year—but we are not talking about nearly enough—is that women are suffering. So what can we do about this?

Pinterest has set up an International Women’s Day fund and will double donations from employees to nonprofits that support women’s success, like the National Domestic Workers Alliance and the Global Fund for Women. We are also accepting and encouraging donations from the public.

Additionally, I’m excited to share that we launched a brand new Pinterest Shop collection featuring 25+ women-founded small businesses and hundreds of products all made, designed or imagined by women.

We’ve also planned a range of programming for Pinterest’s employees throughout the month to celebrate women and their impact in society. Thank you to Women@, our Pinterest Community group for women and allies, for planning a full calendar of thoughtful events, including exciting external speakers, panels highlighting Pinterest colleagues and social/networking sessions. Employees are encouraged to attend as many of these events as they can. I’m particularly excited about our three guest speakers:

  • Meena Harris, Founder and CEO of Phenomenal and a New York Times bestselling author for her book, Ambitious Girl, is a respected entrepreneur and is recognized as an influential voice for women’s equality.
  • Sarah Thomas is the trailblazing American football official who recently made headlines as the first woman to officiate the Super Bowl.
  • Award-winning author Daisy Hernández will share insights into her life and career as an author and activist focused on issues impacting the Latinx, LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities.

While the challenges facing women since the onset of the pandemic have been particularly devastating, this last year has also demonstrated that women continue to be a strategic and powerful force for change.

Pinterest wishes you a happy and meaningful Women’s History Month!
